Abstract
Anorexia nervosa and other diet?related amenorrhea are associated with low bone mineral density in adults and adolescents. This is particularly important because these conditions usually arise in adolescent, when peak bone mass is maximally achieved. Possible contributors to low BMD in anorexia nervosa include hypoestrogenism, undernutrition with decreased lean body mass, hypercortisolemia, decreased IGF-I with GH resistance. Support for the use of hormone therapy alone to increase BMD in amenorrheic anorexic women is limited, and its routine use should be discouraged. The mainstay of treatment for improving BMD in anorexic women is increased caloric intake such that body mass is increased and there is a resumption of menses.
